June 26, 2015 The price of great love is great pain

My heart is heavy as I write this entry. My precious nephew Dare who was only just turned 14 has died suddenly from an aggressive brain infection. How does a family recover from this? I have no idea.
My heart breaks for my sister in law Lisa and brother in law Kirk as well as their daughter Alyssa.
This beautiful young man defied the odds by being born at 23 weeks 5 days. He was an identical twin and while in the womb had a rare condition called twin to twin transfusion syndrome. It occurs when the blood supply of one twin moves to the other the shared placenta. The twin that loses the blood is called the donor twin. The twin that receives the blood is called the recipient twin.
Both infants may have problems depending on how much blood is passed from one to the other. The donor twin may have too little blood, and the other may have too much blood. Dare was the recipient twin and his brother Sage did not survive.
I was with the couple during this time and while the local hospital put her on medications to stop her labour and buy more time. They flew her to a large city hospital and I remember watching the air ambulance fly over my head as I drove the 2-3 hour drive to catch up.

She laboured and they made the decision to resuscitate. Sage was born first and it was very sad however, her husband coached her to push and Dare came out. Very tiny at 1lb 2oz. His eyes were still fused closed. Skin translucent and head the size of an egg. He was moving and fighting though.

I will never forget that time in the delivery room after the birth as they shared the sorrow and hope and allowed me to be part of this intimate time in their lives. I will never forget when I walked to the waiting room and the grandparents, my husband and son and strangers were waiting to find out what was going on. I can vividly remember walking into that room with all these eyes on me and the rush of emotions I had when I blurted out that Dare was alive and both family and strangers wept with me.

Dares journey during that first year was not without bumps in the road. Lisa and Kirk were such a team and although they had to cope with the grief and loss of Sage they put their energy into their family and supporting Dare and each other.

Things did improve and when she came home with Dare he was still on oxygen and immune system weak. There were questions whether he would completely lose his vision. However he continued to do well and make gains.

Despite the fact he lost his vision, he thrived and grew. His parents did not allow his lack of eyesight to prevent him from living life to the fullest. He did martial arts, hiking, camping, swimming, instruments almost everything a sighted child did and were their child's advocate when he faced discrimination due to his loss of eyesight.
Dare was a delight. He almost always had a smile on his face and loved people so much, and people loved him. Although we would only get together a few times a year my husband Will grew close to him as he got older. They were laugh and talk about cars and watches. Will would tease Dare and Dare would love it and be in fits of laughter.
Dares sister Alyssa was born a few years after him, full term. They were as close as two siblings could be. Lisa home schooled them and although they were involved in many community programs, they loved spending time together.

The loss of Dare is almost too much to bear. I know that somehow we will all get through this and Dares life had meaning and although he only had 14 years on earth, he lived more fully then some people who had 80. He is still with us, I can feel him everywhere. Although he shares that he is joyful and it was his time to go- my human mind doesn't want to believe that there is a reason a child has been taken from us so young.

This type of tragedy brings the realization that life can change in a moment regardless of how careful you are and what precautions you take. It makes me question everything. It makes me wish I could get beyond this sorrow and loss faster as, who knows how much time before something changes and I will want these days back. That is the thing about grief, you don't know where it will take your thoughts and heart as it's different for everyone.

The challenge for me and I suspect many is overcoming the fear that each time our child goes out the door, that they will return intact. Monday afternoon I did not do well with this test. When my 16 year old son did not return home after school as usual, I gave him a couple of hours. But, two hours in my heart was pounding, the fear was acute and I was looking for him in my car. As with 16 year olds, he was at a fast food joint with friends and then skateboarding and "forgot". He is dealing with it in his own way too. I let him know that Mom and Dad will be on heightened anxiety so, to just be diligent in letting us know where he is and when he will return. I know for sure that I cannot control destiny and this is just one more challenge that I will need to work through. Life will unfold as it is meant to whether I worry about it or not so, I need to trust in the process. Come back to centre.

My hope is that we can take the love that Dare gave us all and that we have for Dare and share it with each other. My hope is that once we get past the shock and acute sorrow we will remember what legacy Dare would want for us. Difficult time have a way of bringing people together or driving them apart. I have had enough losses to know that together is always better and Dare I'm sure would agree.

Abundance in my life-February 15, 2015

Working with Olivia on the spiritual living for life course for the past 13 weeks has been beautiful. I have become deeply in tune with the spirit world and my own place as a spiritual being living a human experience. During a new years meditation I was provided with a "word" for this year ahead and it is "Abundance". I totally believe that everyone can have what they want in life. Whatever we put energy into, is what comes back to us. So many years ago when I wouldn't want to do something, instead of saying no, I would say I had a sore throat or cold or whatever and I noticed I would actually get sick.
Now if I don't want to do something I don't feel the need to make an excuse, I just say no.

My life is filled with abundance and everything comes to me that I need. My family is beautiful and thriving, my health is great, I have all the "things" I need to live. Not all the luxuries I think I want but everything I need, I have real and intimate friendships and great work. I have full time contract with the womens shelter. Not sure when it will end. Its been a few months and keeps getting extended but, I'll go back to part time when that ends. I have recently been hired at a mental health agency and start there soon as well.

Not every day is easy and I know there will be challenges in all the above areas at one time or another but, I know that it's all required for my evolution towards who I am meant to be.

My vision board has the following. Laughter, healthy, FUN, Purpose, Unconditional Love, Going to India, Gratitude, Yoga, Mindfulness, Meditation, Great Beauty in Nature and Passionate Extraordinary Love! Why not have everything I desire.

Having all of this is not someplace I go to-like a warm destination. It's something that comes to me where I am. I cannot relocate and find all I desire. I am required to build what I desire with all of the distractions and inconveniences that surround all of us. Truth told I cannot imagine being anywhere else anyhow. My family is in my heart and I LOVE them so much. My wee grandchildren are only a few kilometers away and I love being able to go watch their hockey games and have them drop by for a visit. My family adds such depth and joy to my life. The children remind me not to take myself so seriously and have fun.

Abundance.....

3 months later WHATTT???December 1, 2014

How is it possible that I have not written in 3 months? So much has happened and I am in such a great place. My family is doing great. They have excellent health and are working on their own goals and dreams. Always grateful for my children and their families.
I had a colonoscopy in October and it was clear!!!!Yayyyy. I had some concerns due to some bleeding but, only a hemorrhoid internally that doesn't hurt just bled and it's been good for about a month now.
I also had breast surgery 4 weeks ago today. My 26 year old silicone implants had ruptured within my chest. My surgeon said that they would "never get 100% of it out" and "be prepared for significant disfigurement" and I was. I turned it over to my higher power and knew that I would get whatever I needed for my higher good. I was not even a bit nervous until about 15 minutes before surgery when I was alone on a stretcher in the hall. I felt teary, and had a hard time keeping the tears back. Surgery went well. My surgeon said "it could not have gone better" I lost very little blood, they 'GOT 100% OF IT OUT" which I never expected and had to take very little breast tissue so I have beautiful natural and small breasts. I am thrilled with the result and I don't know why I ever thought I wasn't good enough they way I was. In reflecting it's the same thing as having a drinking problem, becoming alcoholic, eating disorders...because I was trying to fix what I felt was wrong with me inside by altering something else. I have never felt better in my life. Another unexpected side effect of healthy eating is I lost 20lbs. I gave up wheat (gluten) , white sugar and dairy back in the summer and I did notice my jeans getting looser but never weigh myself. So, the day before surgery I thought I should weigh myself so I could tell them an accurate number and was shocked to see the number. I got my daughter to check herself and see if it was broken. I was back to work about 11 days after surgery and I can do anything I want now. As with all of my challenges in life I live my life as an open book, you can help others if you do this and that is what my life purpose is about.
My sister has arrived for a week visit. I have missed her so much and look forward to a few more days with her before she leaves. Christmas is upon us and I'm excited for it. Work is going beautifully and I am working with a spiritual "guru" named Olivia and I just love her. I have such deep meaningful relationships and feel such gratitude. All is well and everything I need comes to me at the perfect time.

Fam Jam 2014-August 24, 2014

Michelle made jelly Michelle made jelly rolls and lemon bread that Mom had taught her a few years ago. She brought the picture I took and the original recipe card.
Supporting and loving each other is what we do as a family. Celebrating the good and helping out during the challenging times-always together. Everyone pulled together to help Mom/Nana during her last 6 months and surrounded her as she left the earth last year I decided to use Nana's gift she left to me to honour her memory and spend a week together as a family. We had such an amazing time together and created memories to last a lifetime. As always, everyone pulled together to make this a reality. Justin and the kids were first on scene and opened it up and captained the pontoon boat-as only Justin can do, he had never driven one before but "taught himself". Master of the self teach. He also brought up his guitar and kept us entertained. Also the fishing champion. Try as they might to knock him off that title, it could not be done.
Fishing Champ Justin

Racheal and Brian brought their beautiful boat up and took everyone out. We tubed and rode around the lake.

Cassandra and Tyler Tubing
They also helped bring lots up and we such a help packing up to go and during the clean up-- last day, they were the last ones off the dock. Shawn and Michelle brought up the amazing T shirt painting and Michelle made and brought up Mom's jelly rolls and lemon bread that Mom taught her to make a few Christmas' ago with a picture I took of them and the original recipe card on display. I wept with joy. Tyler brought chinese lanterns and we lit them and sent them off with intentions. Samantha waited around all day for me to be ready to leave to go to the cottage and we left together and stuffed everything I couldn't fit..into her car to take, her friend Bryce carried "lots" of the stuff up and down hills in Muskoka, he "passed" his initiation into our group with flying colours.
Sam and Bryce playing games

Christian helped with everything before, during and after the trip. Loading and unloaded and cleaning up. Cassandra had everyone write down on a piece of birch bark one thing that we wanted to "let go of" and throw it into the fire. Many people talked about what they wrote and it was moving to hear things from the heart. We celebrated Racheals 29th birthday, fished, ate,
swam, boated, tubing was fun, games, reading, guitar and singing around the fire, roasting smores with some success, rock hunting, exploring and wonderful conversation in the many nooks and crannies of this magical island. Cass, Taylor, Jack and Lydia kept us looking at everything with new eyes as they explored and learned new things. Taylor would play baseball 24 hours a day and fortunately there was almost always a willing pitcher or catcher. Jack was the explorer and made me see things I would never have noticed and Lydia kept the cuteness factor always high. Her songs were precious and she loved the water. We had 4 cottages. Will and I in the boathouse cottage, Daily requests for essential oil treatments. "Can you do your voodoo" was heard daily and I loved to do it. Yoga and mediation on the deck and beach was lovely.
Doing the "crow" on the beach

Sam and Bryce and then Tyler in the bunkie, Shawn, Michelle and the kids in the guest cottage and Racheal, Brian, Christian and Justin and the kids in the main cottage. All on an island that gave us some privacy and kept us connected. Amazing things in each cottage and even several "ghost sightings" by a few of us. The two hawks appeared one day to Will and I off the north end of the island. Circled around and it was a beautiful sight.

The Hawks appear off the north side of the island
I am in awe of the love that I receive from these precious souls that I was entrusted to raise.
My kids are each others best friends

The fact that the weather wasn't perfect made no difference to any of us. We just continued to embrace each day to the fullest and have fun. I would not trade what I have for anything anyone else does. When it is my time to leave this earth I know I have lived a well lived and well loved life.
Cassandra and Racheal having fun in the sand

My beautiful family

Miigwetch for that. It is Ojibwe that means thank you but more then that. It's humility and gratitude.

The Soul's Purpose-July 26, 2014

It has been a wonderful summer. My writing seems to be on the back burner. I am going through some intense spiritual growth and at times find it difficult to articulate. One of my dear and wise friends said to me "maybe you are not meant to talk about it". I have connected with a beautiful spiritual soul named Olivia who is in the community and things are opening up in a good way. I am doing yoga most days on the back deck. It makes me feel connected to my higher self to be outside. Going back a few weeks now, the day after I met with Olivia I had a very interesting thing happen. I had been at my son's soccer game and was on my way home from Brooklin and decided to take a slightly less traveled path to get home. It was a beautiful night with the full super moon staring down at me.
I"m coming back Conlin Road to Garrard Road and only one on the road. Looking at the moon, enjoying the drive and a deer came out from the other side of the road out of nowhere and I speed up to get ahead of it, and it's accelerating....faster then me so I hit the brakes and slow down and this deer is galloping alongside my car at the same speed for a second, I look over right into it's eye....surreal feeling. It felt like time stopped, it could have been a second a minute or longer but, in reality I'm sure it was a second or two.  I slowed down more and it went ahead and over in front of my car. I'm sitting there in disbelief watching this deer gallop away and look in my rear view mirror to make sure no cars are coming and about 75 feet back this other deer is galloping up the centre. I have to tell you I felt like I was watching this happen. Normally when I have a close call I am very shaky afterwards but, I did not feel fear at all. I was worried briefly about hurting the dear but, I mainly remember being in wonder of this scene unfolding.
I feel a deep sense of peace in my life lately. Things that had been weighing heavily on me I have been able to let go of. I can't say that nothing bothers me but, I am as close to this place as I ever have been. It's a delicate balance of connecting with partner, family, friends and others, work that I love, community service and involvement, my 12 step fellowship, meditation and yoga, prayer, physical activity (I need to work on) and healthy food and of course my oils which are with me every step of the way.
I've been on them for a few months now and I know they are useful for way more then I ever thought. Mood, meditation, pure food, healthy body moisture, sleep, wake and I know they have helped me with my deepening spirituality. I have such gratitude for all the is opening up and all that is. More recently I have brought crystals into my practice. The energy fields in us known as chakras can become blocked and cause physical, emotional and spiritual distress so use of these things helps to keep the energy flowing. Also on this path has been a reduction of "stuff". Non-attachment to stuff is part of the path. I have cleared out stuff to the dump, local drop off bins and stores, a yard sale, selling online and still more to go. My soul friend Olivia posted a link online and this spoke to me about my goals right now with the "stuff" so I'll close with it. Namaste.

The Law of Attachment

Your Ego has wants, your Soul has needs. You may not get what you want but you will definitely get what you need for your healing, growth and evolvement.
Your Ego wants create attachments to things that you want to make you feel better about yourself. Your wants you are attached to will manipulate and control your inner sense of worth and happiness. If you receive your wants you are attached to those wants being received, and remaining, to feel worthy and happy. If you don't receive these wants or they do not remain or sustain themselves, you feel unworthy and not happy. Attachment creates conditional acceptance and determines your fluctuating inner self worth attitudes. Being attached to something creates dependency. You act like a puppet on a string being manipulated and controlled in conditional acceptance and conditional love.

The converse, being detached, comes from your Soul and creates unconditional acceptance of yourself, by yourself, and unconditional self love resulting in positive self worthiness.

Remembering Mom and moving on May 1, 2014

Today is the 1 year anniversary of when my Mom died. I am having a challenging time today and feel like I am reliving much of last year. I was so tired last night and slept for 9 hours, waking at 10am this morning but, wanting to go back to sleep, got up instead. The very first thing I thought I when I saw the time was, this time last year I was walking into Moms room and saw how sick she looked and she told me I should call people if they wanted to come before she died. I immediately got on the phone to my sister in B.C. and she rearranged her flights to come that day Wednesday instead of the next day. I tried to get hold of my brother and could not. I left messages for him everywhere I could think to but he was doing some chores with a friend, getting wood or something to or from the cabin. My daughter Racheal arrived with a basket of food and snacks, then one by one my children arrived. My daughter in law brought the two youngest grandchildren in and then as evening drew, Mom's agitation grew to calmness. I slipped my arm around her head and placed my other arm across her chest and placed my head down with hers as she passed into whatever comes next. I think she had left already but her body died around 8:50pm. Every segment of time today has a memory associated with it. I have just given into the day as it is and know I must feel what I feel or it will just come up later. I turned down a work shift since I thought I should just be in this day. I went and picked up two perennial plants today and planted them to honor my Moms memory.
Yesterday I went with my sweet friend Christine from work. We got our noses pierced. Mom would have hated it. That's the moving on part
Christine and I right after our nose piercing

Life was meant to be lived and Mom knew that and would want everyone to carry on and live full lives. Tomorrow will come soon enough and then 1 year will be passed. Things change and time moves on. Anusha left 2 weeks ago and went back to India. So our house is changing and shrinking again. One thing for sure in life, change is constant.

Spring is here-April 11, 2014

Warm temperatures and sunshine are here at last. I have been extremely busy the past month. Lots of work and lots of training. I was away at Ontario Regional Conference in Toronto and had a blast. A bit of a crash followed that. I got into about a week long funk. Felt really down and was a bit worried but, it turned around and I am back to my optimistic happy self. I am putting it down to a combination of things. As Mom's 1 year anniversary approach in a few weeks I have been remember "this time last year" and feeling the loss all over again. There have been some things going on with my kids and as much as I try to practice healthy detachment I guess I am who I am and I feel when my kids are going through hard times. Some tension around an issue and then I got my first palliative care patient and was unable to work with her because she went downhill so quickly she was non-responsive and so I supported her daughter for about 10 days and she died. Breast, liver and lung cancer. I am declining more clients until I get past the 1 year anniversary now.
My dear friend got terminated yesterday from her job she has been at for 24 years. No fault and business cutbacks all over the company. It has been hard watching her go through this as I know exactly how she feels. The emotional upheaval and fear can be paralyzing. I remember how lost and directionless I felt and the overwhelming sense of disbelief. It was one of the worst experiences of my life and in hindsight one of the best. It helped me develop a strong faith and brought me to the path I am on now. She is strong and will get through it but, the hard part is knowing that there is really nothing I can do to help other than share my experience strength and hope and be there to let her know she's not alone. My sister had her breast off on Wednesday. Hopefully this means that she can put the cancer and stress behind her and get busy living the dream. I finished my exam tonight for philosophy and could not be happier. All is good.
